Why do we stereotype? Seriously? I am starting to get mad at myself for being soo stereotypical. While working at the Ranger Station/Visitor center I see about 30-40 people a day and I cannot help but stereotype them all when they walk in the front doors. (Oh great another granola hippy who is going to ask me about plants that I don’t know about, or oh no Kids!! Who will push every single button and grab every single stuffed animal.) But most recently it was Bikers that I wrongly stereotyped.
Yesterday I was at the ranger station, by myself as usual, when a group of bikers came in. There were about 15 of them, they all drove Harley’s and were wearing leather. My first thought was, oh no. I don’t want to be alone with this biker gang! But I kept telling myself that bikers’ being mean is just a bad stereotype that they get labeled as. And that was exactly the case. They were all very polite and walked around and bought things for their children at home, including stuffed animals and t-shirts.
This morning I got a phone call at the Ranger station from one of the bikers. He had left his camera at a picnic table at one of our lava trails. He said it would make his day if we found it and he was so mad at himself for forgetting it. He said he was the group photographer for all the bikers and even said that if we found it he would just ask to have the memory card sent to him and we could keep his camera. He was so thankful when I told him that we would go look for it for him.
How could I judge them as being mean and even be scared of them, when this one guy seemed so freaking nice?
It got me thinking about what people judge me as. Dumb Blonde, girly girl is what I’ve come up with. Lol. When people meet me, they don’t know who I am or what I’ve done with my life. They just see me as who I am on the outside. This blonde girl, wearing flip flops with her BLM uniform with makeup and jewelry (This is not the norm, trust me), Who has no clue about a lot of the area she is explaining to visitors because she just moved here. They don’t know that this blonde girl is Jaclyn Hall… soon to be Waggoner and that she has a degree and graduated Cum Laude and isn’t using her degree how she would like. That she is engaged and to a wonderful man and has a loving group of family and friends.
So from now on if I don’t want people to judge me (which they will) I am going to TRY to be a bit better at judging others. It just isn’t fair.
UPDATE: A visitor found this guy’s camera and brought it to another visitor’s center, who just called me and told me they had the camera. I called the guy back to tell him we found it and what did he say, He said he wanted my name and work address so he can send me a thank you letter in helping him get his camera back. Wow. God taught me a lesson on that one. Don’t Judge!
